And it appears the Binance executive has the Biden Administration to thank for finally springing him from a prison cell in Nigeria where he had been incarcerated for months on money laundering charges.
His family said he has left Nigeria for the US.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to the US government for their efforts in securing his release,” said Yuki Gambaryan, Tigran’s wife, in a statement.
“It is a huge relief this day has come,” she continued. “The past eight months have been a living nightmare.”
On Wednesday, Nigerian prosecutors dropped the indictment against Gambaryan, 40, whose health had been deteriorating in prison.
The case had stemmed from a long-running clash between Binance and the Nigerian government over the exchange’s unlicenced activities in Africa’s most populous nation.

Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has provided free medical services to over 3,370 residents in different areas as part of its Renewed Hope Medical Mission.
The services include antenatal care, immunisation, free HIV and diabetes screening, screening for hypertension and sickle cell diseases, free dental health services, and nutritional assessment, among others.
FCT minister of state, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, while flagging off the outreach in Bwari area council, said the FCTA was fully committed to meeting not just the peoples’ health needs, but also needs that would give residents the best health services.
Mariya said Nigeria is one of the African nations with high maternal and child morbidity and mortality resulting from poor ANC attendance, low facility-based delivery and low uptake of immunisation and family planning services, especially in hard-to-reach communities.
She added that rapid population expansion leading to increased demand for health services had posed serious health challenges to the administration.
The minister said to address some of the challenges, the FCT Administration was committed to improving the primary healthcare system such as renovation, upgrading and building of more primary health centres across the six area councils and employment of more health workers.
She spoke on danger signs in pregnancy, the importance of ANC attendance, exclusive breastfeeding, importance of immunisation in preventing childhood diseases such as polio, TB, pneumonia, pertussis, diphtheria, measles, the importance of screening for HIV, diabetes and hypertension, among others.
Earlier, the mandate secretary of health services and environment secretariat, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, said despite recent improvements in access to quality healthcare for residents of the Federal Capital Territory, many communities remained underserved.
Fasawe emphasised the success recorded in the previous free medical outreach held in Kuje area council that led to the expansion of the 2024 medical mission.
“We attended to 1,578 general outpatients, with 42 referred to Wuse and Asokoro Hospitals for surgery.
“Dental services were provided for 302 patients, including 45 extractions, 12 dentures and five operculectomies, with 48 referrals to Wuse Hospital.
“For eye care, we saw 931 patients, provided reading glasses to 531 of them, and made 91 referrals to Asokoro Hospital, where 29 cataract extractions have been completed. Antenatal care was provided to 74 women, and with 49 enrolled in health insurance,” she said.
The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Hajiya Ireti Heebah Kingibe, has sympathised with traders affected by the fire outbreak that occurred at Kaura Market, Abuja on August 17 at about 10.00p.m.
This was as the lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, distributed cash to market women in some markets in her district.
The senator who was in her constituency for a fertiliser empowerment programme aimed at supporting farmers in the district, took the opportunity to visit markets in Kogi Central and provided financial assistance directly to market women.
However, addressing the affected traders and Management of the market, leader of Kingibe’s delegation, John Destiny, explained that they were sent by the senator to sympathise with owners of the affected shops.
He pledged the lawmaker’s commitment towards ensuring the facilitation of necessary support to the victims, explaining that the senator would have come personally but was out of the country on recess and some national assignments.
Destiny, who is the head of Senator Kingibe’s Constituency Office, thanked God that no life was lost and advised the affected traders to be optimistic of receiving support.
He noted that the government would not hesitate to come to their aid.
He, however, urged the traders to be more conscious in their use of electrical appliances by turning them off at the close of work each day.
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike has announced the dismantling of the park and pay scheme in the nation’s capital.
Wike made the revelation during a live media parley on Wednesday in Abuja to mark his one year in office.
The Minister, however, frowned at the sharing formula, where the consultant takes 80%, and the FCT Administration takes 20%.
According to him: “The call from a senior advocate, brought to light a scheme that has been siphoning government funds under the guise of a legal operation.
“The scheme, which appears to have been operating under the radar, highlights a critical flaw in the system that allows private consultants to pocket the lion’s share of revenues meant for the government.
“These are things we need to fight within the system. Sometimes, if you don’t bring it to our attention, we may not know. We can’t be everywhere.
“The incident unfolded when a senior advocate reached out to him with a troubling report. He said, ‘Sir, some people came to our office and are trying to seize our cars. They claim to be from the Transport Secretariat.’ I asked him to give the person the phone, and I asked the person, ‘Who are you?’ He said he is from ‘Park and Pay from the Transport Secretariat.”
Wike, who said he was unaware of such activities, immediately sought clarification.
“I wasn’t aware of this, so I called the person in charge of it. I asked, ‘Who collects the money?’ Unknown to us, there are agreements between the secretariat and some people who claim to be consultants. So, the consultant takes 80%, and the FCT administration takes 20%,” Wike explained.
Action would be taken to dismantle the operation. “I’m trying to say that it’s illegal, and nothing like that exists. And if my colleague hadn’t called me, I wouldn’t have known,” he concluded.
This incident has not only brought to light a specific case of corruption but has also highlighted the importance of vigilance in governance.
Wike’s swift response is expected to lead to a broader investigation into similar practices across the FCT, ensuring that the government’s coffers are protected from exploitation by unscrupulous actors.
